Trestle Bent |
|
This trestle is a 3 story bent (660mm) but can be shortened to 2 stories (440mm) or 1 story (220mm) as necessary or increased to 5, even 6 stories, although that is about as high as major railroads built. Logging roads and similar backwoods outfits occasionally went higher, such as the lofty 120 foot trestle on Red Cabin Creek in Washington State's Skagit Valley. In any case, trestles were rarely scientifically engineered except on major standard gauge lines. There were many local modifications and you can alter the size of the timbers to suit your r.r.'s needs or to scale the material to a prototype. The major railroads normally use squared timbers, of course but, for a backwoods logging road, you should use suitably sized dowels, roughed up to resemble log pilings. This would be fitting on many small branch lines as well.
