Denver & Rio Grand Coaling Tower
|
The coaling tower, or “tipple”, at Chama is the last one remaining of several that were constructed on the D&RGW in the heyday of the narrow gauge. The tipple is a double bucket type; the Fairbanks oil engine in the machinery shed hauls a loaded bucket up the hoist to where it is automatically tipped and dumped into the coal bin, and at the same time the other bucket, now empty, is lowered. The Chama tipple was built in 1924 and, though no longer used, has stood up to the weather surprisingly well for over 80 years now. |
